Suicide Squad

Suicide Squad is directed by David Ayer and stars Will Smith, Margot Robbie, Viola Davis, Cara Delevingne, Jay Hernandez and Jared Leto, and tells the story of a group of meta-human super villains who are ordered to join Task Force X run by the wicked Amanda Waller, in order to take down an ancient god that is amplifying supernatural energy throughout Midway City.

After Batman v Superman I was praying that this Suicide Squad was going to be good since DC are trying to set up a cinematic universe with as much strength as Marvel and the trailer campaign for this film was absolutely  amazing. Thankfully I wasn't disappointed  by this film however that doesn't mean there aren't somethings wrong with it.

In the first scene we are all introduced to the team and their origin story's, but some of them were slightly rushed. June Moon (Delevingne) has a very confusing origin story that doesnt tell us much about the character, as well as Harley Quinn (Robbie) who has an amazing back story which was right infront off us but was told through flash backs and hallucinations so it was completely jumbled and was over really quickly. Also, all these story's are narrated over, It's nice that the film wants us to hear it from Waller but I wanted to see it play out not be told what was happening. Like Finding Dory and Ghostbusters the best part about this film is the characters Robbie's portrayal  is beyond words, I thought that she was exactly like Harley Quinn from all the animated TV shows and all the Batman Games but with her own unique take, she was crazy yet deadly and she was playful yet you felt bad for her as she was so obsessed with The Joker even though he abuses her, the only word I can think of is phenomenal. Will Smith blew me away as Deadshot, his character was the more humane of the bunch and you really got involved with his emotions and his relationship with his daughter, this is definitely a turning point for Will Smith and one of his best roles in years. Viola Davis as usual is amazing; she is a heartless brute as Amanda Waller who will do anything and screw over anyone to get what she wants. Then there's Joker. Whilst he isn't in the film much, Jared Leto's take on The Joker is a complete master piece, I have never felt this scared of a villain in years, he is completely insane yet his presence is haunting and his relationship with Harley is so messed up. I can not wait to see him with a bigger role in  the future. Arkham Asylum was done very well and felt very claustrophobic, it had sickeningly sinister tone and the fact that Batman goes around putting the villains in the Asylum makes it feel more and more accurate to the comics.

The biggest problem is the layout, the whole film is very messy; most scenes don't flow into each other well so it feels rather clunky and miss placed and the editing is not up to standard, good songs were placed in really random moments in the film; it's like David Ayer is trying to make the music to the work for him.  I think the plot was very week it sort of felt like two different films that were badly merged into one. I think this film would've bene perfected have it a new director and a completely different plot as I think it's more about miss guidance from Ayer then bad film making. That being said the actions scenes were visually impressive, The camera work was very good, I liked how dark the film was without trying to be dark and the script was really good, every line matched each character perfectly.

Overall the action was great, the characters were amazing and there is one scene involving the transformation of Harley Quinn that is done so well it sends shivers down my spine however the film was messy, the editing was choppy and the plot was so thin it didn't give the characters much to work with.

I am going to give Suicide Squad:

6.9/10
